Editing Blog: My struggles with music & duration

Image
Editing is not my absolute favorite part of filmmaking as of now. I only say this because I'm not very good at it yet and that bothers me. When I watch movies made by famous filmmakers I'm always quick to appreciate its editing. But, after editing a project myself, I understand how hard editing can be. However, editing my Kiss eyelashes commercial was admittedly, not as hard as I first thought it would be. When I get to do more projects like this, I think I'll learn to love it. The only difficultly I encountered was finding the perfect music that would match the theme of my commercial as well as getting the duration of the film right. I had trouble finding the right music because I just felt like any song I'd pick would be insufficient. I looked up songs of all decades. From Aretha Franklin's "Baby Baby Baby" to Beyonce's "Independent Woman." While there were many songs that I were eager to use, none of them felt right to put into a commercia...

Filming Blog: Bittersweet

On Sunday, October 25th, I started the filming process for my Kiss Eyelashes commercial. On this day I did my in-house takes for the commercial, which didn't go as smoothly as I thought it would. When I got dress and did my makeup, I unfortunately had to redo my makeup three times because it was not exactly how I wanted it to be. For some reason I just was not satisfied so I just removed all the eye make up and took a breath. When I came back with a clear mind, I redid my makeup and it came out decent. After I finished getting ready I set up my tripod so that I could start filming. In between takes I accidently pushed over my tripod and it ended up breaking. Since it was raining really bad outside, I couldn't go out to go buy another one and on top of that, I was home alone. So, I had to enact my backup plan. I called my a few of my relatives and none of them could come and help me. But, my last call was to mom to see when she would get off of work and in my favor, she came ho...

Planning Storyboard for my Eyelash Commercial

Image
First Scene: This scene will show my distaste for appearance. This will be shot in my bathroom from one angle. I will be standing up in front of my bathroom mirror, looking at myself. I will have my outfit and makeup on. Ill say something along the lines of, "I look like I'm missing something." I've noted that in some of the commercials I've watched, the model is always in their bathroom doing their makeup. Second Scene: In this scene, I will still be in my bathroom, but I will be shooting from a different angle. This time I will be sitting down. I'll say, "My hair, makeup, and outfit looks good, What could it be?" And then, *gasp* "I know exactly what it is..." *grabs keys*. Third Scene: This scene will just consist of  my mother filming me walking inside the Beauty Supply store. I'll have her do a pan to me walking. Fourth Scene: This will be me walking out of the store with a bag in my hand (clearly excited.) My mom will film me aga...

Planning for my Eyelash Commercial

Image
Schedule Plan: 10/22 I will research conventions of my product. 10/23 I will start planning for my eyelash commercial and get all of my props situated. 10/24 I will establish my story board. 10/25 I will film in-house takes for my project. 10/28 I will film outside takes for my project since the weather will hopefully allow me that day. 10/29-11/1 I will work on editing my project and doing any final touches. Props: I will be using makeup brushes, palettes, a hand held mirror, and of course, a set of eyelashes for my in-house takes. As for my outside takes, I will be using my keys and a car as props. Costume:  I will choose an outfit I already have in my closet as a costume for the commercial. I may even do a costume change for dramatic effect, to show the impact the eye lashes had on my confidence. At first I may start in my pajamas or sweatpants, then transition to a beautiful gown/dress. This will show a full transformation in my appearance. Sets: I will be shooting in a ...

Research blog: Commercial Conventions

After watching many cosmetic and makeup commercials, I’ve noticed many common themes. In all of the commercials for eyelashes and eye makeup, I’ve seen that every single setting was in a place with bright lighting. For example, a bathroom with LED lighting. Or even a bedroom with a full length mirror. I’ve seen some commercials of models getting ready and their whole vanity is filled with makeup, so much that you can’t even see every individual product. In some videos, there were shots of the model in a messy room to show indecisiveness.  I’ve also noted that there are always clips of the finishing touches of the subject doing their makeup. There are always vibrant eye makeup looks that bring attention to the main event, the eyes. There are often closeups of the eyes and even slow motion clips. As well as close ups of the actual products and slow motion clips of those too. The model is often glammed up in her/his finest clothing and on a hurry to get somewhere. Maybe ...
