Editing Blog: My struggles with music & duration

Editing is not my absolute favorite part of filmmaking as of now. I only say this because I'm not very good at it yet and that bothers me. When I watch movies made by famous filmmakers I'm always quick to appreciate its editing. But, after editing a project myself, I understand how hard editing can be. However, editing my Kiss eyelashes commercial was admittedly, not as hard as I first thought it would be. When I get to do more projects like this, I think I'll learn to love it. The only difficultly I encountered was finding the perfect music that would match the theme of my commercial as well as getting the duration of the film right. I had trouble finding the right music because I just felt like any song I'd pick would be insufficient. I looked up songs of all decades. From Aretha Franklin's "Baby Baby Baby" to Beyonce's "Independent Woman." While there were many songs that I were eager to use, none of them felt right to put into a commercial. After my internal fight with myself over what song I would use, I picked "I Got You (I Feel Good) by James Brown & The Famous Flames. As for my difficulty in cutting and trimming the commercial's duration, that was a bit more frustrating. When I first put all my clips into VideoShop editor, the time came out to be almost 50 seconds. This was fine, since I hadn't started trimming each clip yet. The problem came after, when I trimmed the clips, the commercial came out to 37 seconds. I had to go back in to take out some unnecessary additions to get it in the optimal time range. Since all the other scenes were of me talking, I trimmed down the slow-mo I inserted. I finally got the duration down to exactly 30 seconds. This included all the transitions and music I added to it. After all I've encountered with this project, I was finally satisfied with my first commercial.

See you in the next one!
