Genre Research: The Perks of Being a Wallflower

  • What elements of the genre that you chose to base your final task on does this movie have?
This movie has almost all of the elements I want to cover. From voice-overs, to lighting and dialogue. The voice-overs in this movie perfectly describe what the main character fails to say in the movie. There are many different sounds and music tracks playing that bring together the entire movie. The soundtracks are sometimes very calm and then directly after you'll see a scene change and there is a whole different mood, but it just flows together perfectly. There is a constant hand-held camera effect that bring out the realness of the situations that occur in the movie. In many scenes, people can even reflect and see similarities in their own lives. There are also flashbacks throughout some scenes of the movies. These bring out the raw emotion in scenes and makes the audience understand what a character is feeling.

  • What elements of the genre did the movie have that you like?
I really like that voiceovers are incorporated throughout the movie. It brings the audience in on a "secret" that the actual people in the movie are not aware of. There is also a lot of raw emotion in this movie, which is a common theme in teen dramas. The people in the movie go through so many motions that the audience feels as well. This makes the audience is invested into the movie . The audience becomes apart of this cinematic universe. This makes the audience remember and be attached to this film a long time after the movie is over.

  • What elements of the genre did the movie have that did not appeal to you?
There was some bullying and name calling in this movie that was a little uncomfortable to watch. There was also the possibility of suicide that was a bit "tear-jerking."

See you in the next one!
