Filming blog: The Troubles of Filming during Thanksgiving Break

Image
So, during the week of the holiday, Thanksgiving, students are given a break from school. This is when I planned on filming my music video with my friend who is starring in it. While we planned on her coming to my house to filmed towards the beginning of the break, that is not what occurred. Due to our busy schedules and quarantining to make sure both of us were negative for Covid-19, we ended up having to film at the end of the break. We both had homework to do for other classes as well as having to spending time with our families, which was our main priority. So of course, that threw off our initial plans. However, it wasn't that much of a problem since we found a way to match up our schedules in a way that benefitted us both. During the actual filming, we both had a fun time recording and finding ways to spruce up the angles I recorded her in. While it took us about an hour to film, it felt like only five minutes since we enjoyed the process of it. Filming someone else instead ...

Planning Storyboard for my Music Video

Image
First Scene: I planned out my storyboard somewhat according to the lyrics of the song I chose. I did this so that I could bring the story told in this song, to life. I will start off by having my actor standing in front of the mirror. But, I will be just showing her reflection. This will cover the lyrics, "I'm just a mirror, you check your complexion.." Second Scene:  In this scene I will start by panning to the left and then it will end with me tilting up. In this scene there will just be an empty room to show loneliness. This scene will cover the lyrics," To find your reflection's all alone, I had to go." Third Scene: In this scene I will be tilting down to reveal my actor sitting on the bed with her head in her hands and a book beside her. This will be covering the lines saying, "Can't you hear me? I'm not coming home." Fourth Scene: My actor will open up her book that is sitting on the bed next to her. This will cover the lines sayin...

Planning for my Music Video

Image
Song Title: The song I've chosen is My Future by Billie Eilish. Props: As for props, they may change over the course of filming based on what looks best. As for now, I will use the LED lights and a 'galaxy' light I have in order to stay loyal to some conventions I've researched. Also, I will be using a mirror and a hairbrush. (Again, these things may change and I will document that need be.) Costumes: As for costumes, there will be business casual clothing in some scenes and pajamas in other scenes. Location: Everything will be filmed inside of my house. Sets: Most of the scenes will be filmed inside of my room. If it meets the time requirements, I will branch out to other places in the house, such as the kitchen, bathroom, and/or the living room. Schedule: 11/13: I've researched conventions for my genre. I will take into account which conventions I will use in the production process, as well as the ones I will challenge. 11/16-11/17: I will formally plan for my m...

Research blog: Music Video Conventions

Image
In the Indie/Alternative genre of music videos, conventions are varied. In this genre there are sometimes cartoon illustrations and shining colors. In most of the music videos I've watched of this genre, I've noticed that there are always contrasting filters. In some parts of the videos there and black and white filters or vintage filters. These filters work to signify simplicity and establish moods in each scene. Most music videos started out in a dark space and then as the video progressed, the scene get brighter and more complex. They are often filmed in multiple locations to set each scene in the way that the lyrics portray. The camera is almost always following its subject and in most videos it is filmed like a story being told. Sometimes the subject is silent through the video, not lip-syncing. There may be reflective surfaces like mirrored walls to make the space look small and cozy, or there could be a large field, to have a freeing setting. There is almost always non-...

Introduction to the Music Video Project

Image
I've decided to work with myself for this project. I made this decision because when the final task comes, I will most likely be doing it by myself then too and I'd like to be prepared for that. I wouldn't have a easily accessible way to get to my partner if I did choose to do it with someone else. Also, I wanted to work by myself because I like to have creative control when doing these projects. In choosing a song I had trouble with picking, because when the assignment came up, I automatically had song ideas pop in my head. When it came down to picking, I narrowed my choices down to Eternal Sunshine by Jhene Aiko and My Future by Billie Eilish. After debating over the course of a few days, I picked my song. The song I chose for this project is My Future by Billie Eilish. I chose this song because I resonate with it the most. One of the main lines in this song is, "I'm in love with my future, can't wait to meet her." Which means that instead of focusing o...

Creative Critical Reflection

Image
1. How does your product use or challenge conventions and how does it represent social groups issues? My project used many conventions of the cosmetic industry as well as somewhat challenged them. In producing this commercial, I've done things I've previously seen like filming in the bathroom, in front of the mirror, and using vibrant eye makeup to avert attention to the eyes. In editing, I also got a closeup of the product and dropped in a slow motion shot. To challenge conventions, I didn't have on a full face of makeup, to show that no one is perfect and I showed myself going to the beauty supply store (something I did not see commonly). This represents issues in the teenage age group in which 'perfection' is something people want to achieve in their own ways. When I showed myself going out of my way to get eyelashes because I felt incomplete is an exaggeration of how many teens go through this process when getting ready. Some would cancel their plans if they don...

My Commercial

Image
This was my first ever major project that I've put together. It was a fun and rewarding experience to see my eyelash commercial start from just an idea in my head to actually filming and editing it. I truly loved the concept of actually finishing something and being proud of it in the end. The process of storyboarding was probably one of my favorite parts in this entire project. I have never actually put my ideas on paper before trying to convey it to others. I can say that storyboard really took away some of my indecisiveness and it was one less thing I had to worry about because I filmed everything based off of it. Although I can look back a see some things I could have done better, I am content with what I've done. I've certainly learned that patience is key in the producing process. When I first came up with my concept for my eyelash commercial, I initially had the idea to use one of my family members as my subject. However, when I realized that my overbearing side woul...
